How you can help:

Monetary contributions – Your personal donations and proceeds from your campus fundraisers should be deposited in the

Haiti Disaster Relief Account being maintained by the Business Office. Please make checks payable to Elizabethtown College and indicate “Haiti Disaster Relief Initiative” on the memo line.  Charges to Student ID cards will be accepted.

Supply collection – Elizabethtown College is also working to collect supplies needed for Haiti, in partnership with Millersville University (watch the video). Supplies will be delivered to Millersville University over the next 3 weeks where a 20-ton container is waiting to be filled and flown under the United Nations flag to Haiti. Please secure your donated items in zip lock storage bags. Collections locations will be at the Center for Global Citizenship and the Student Center.

Distinguished Student Awards

The Campus Life Council encourages nominations for this year’s Distinguished Student Awards. Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by a fellow student, faculty or staff member. Two distinguished students are chosen from each of the first-year, sophomore, junior and senior classes. College activities, leadership, community service, scholastics and other contributions to college life receive strong consideration. All nominees will be contacted for specific information relevant to the criteria stated. Award recipients will be announced at the annual Awards Ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, in Leffler Chapel.

Points of Distinction Scholar

In keeping with our commitment to “Educate for Service,” the Points of Distinction Scholar award will be granted to a senior student who best demonstrates an effective integration of the four strategic signature attributes of an Elizabethtown College education: relationship-centered learning, international and intercultural understanding, purposeful life work and experiential learning. Evidence of his or her engagement with our Points of Distinction may include achievements made through advising or mentoring relationships, international study or intercultural service project, a fulfilling internship experience, a campus or community leadership role, how he or she has integrated service into personal educational goals, etc. The Points of Distinction Scholar will be chosen from among those students who apply for the Distinguished Student Award (not a separate application process). This student also will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony.

Re:         Student Parking Now Available in Myer Lot I

Recently, the Campus Security Department and the Facilities Planning and Construction Committee performed a review of current campus parking needs for students. In response to this review, a determination was made to allow for additional student parking spaces from existing spaces in Lot I, located on the west side of Myer Hall that faces the Campus Security office. Currently, Lot I is available for faculty/staff and commuter parking.

In order to allow for additional student parking spaces given current demand, beginning November 8, 2009, Lot I will be changed to accommodate resident student parking, including resident sophomore students. This will allow for 47 additional spaces designated for student parking needs.

Please note that faculty and staff parking continues to be available in the Church of the Brethren lot located across the street from the Myer lot. More than 70 spaces are available for faculty/staff parking on the left side of the church lot (right side is reserved for church only and will be enforced).

First-year students are not permitted to park in Lot I during the week, but are permitted to park in Lot I after 4 p.m. on Friday until 2 a.m. on Monday mornings. Designated “No Parking” areas in Lot I will be strictly enforced, as service vehicles and Copy Services customers will continue to have access to the Myer facility.

The Lot I parking assignment change will remain in effect until the end of the fall semester. At that time, we will reevaluate the change for effectiveness and inform the community if further changes are needed.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation as we look to address and improve upon our student parking availability. Following a national trend, our College community has seen an upswing in the number of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases in recent weeks. To date, there have been more than 50 students who have exhibited ILI symptoms. Most of these students have gone home to recover.

Members of the College’s Emergency Management Group (EMG), who are continuing to meet regularly to assess necessary response, remind students to follow the health guidelines for flu prevention outlined on the Student Health website. If you begin to exhibit flu-like symptoms – high fever, chills, dry cough, muscle and joint pain, headache, etc. – you immediately should contact a College Health Liaison at the Penn State Hershey Medical Group Elizabethtown at 717.489.1021. The College Health Liaison will provide you with guidance about actions you should take and will notify College officials.

Please be aware, the EMG is strongly recommending that all students, who develop an ILI, go home to recover. The decision to leave campus temporarily will provide ill students with the best opportunity for a speedy recovery and will protect other members of the campus community from exposure.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “vaccines are the most important tool we have for preventing influenza.” Currently, there is no finalized plan to provide the H1N1 vaccine on campus. We will keep the College Community apprised of local sites offering the immunization. Additionally, today from 3 until 5 p.m., the College will hold a seasonal flu shot clinic in Baugher Student Center Room 258. The cost is $18, payable by cash/check or College charge. If you have questions about the clinic, please e-mail studenthealth@etown.edu.

We understand that water will become an increasingly limited resource and that conservation of water is essential for the future. Please read the Scientific American article at this link to learn about anticipated future problems that we can expect from limited water availability and strategies to better manage this increasingly scarce resource. The water conserving shower heads and sink aerators are part of our campus-wide conservation work that allows the College to continue in our goal of reducing our consumption of resources to minimize our carbon footprint. The sink aerators that we are installing are 0.5 gallons per minute and the shower heads are 1.5 gallon per minute devices similar to ones that you would use in your homes.
